Mustard Seed Sunday: Lessons from a Sheep Dog

It’s SUNDAY and that means it’s MUSTARD SEED SUNDAY. On Sundays, I usually blog from that day at church during the preacher’s sermon or from during the week where I have heard our children say something and I was able to add something to their conversation….perhaps, that will plant a little seed in our spiritual growth along the way.

Today’s MUSTARD SEED SUNDAY comes from the Parker County Cowboy Church.

Brother Louis said:

A couple of years ago I read a true story about a sheep dog named Lass.  The book title is “Lessons From A Sheep Dog.”   This Border Collie had lived her life in town chained in a lady’s  back yard.   She was a prisoner trapped and  unable to realize the purpose she had been created for;  to herd sheep.  One day Lass gets a new master and she is taken to his place to serve him by helping him herd his sheep. She becomes a different dog.

Like this dog many times in our lives we feel like sin has us chained and trapped.  Like the dog, until we are freed by the gift of God’s salvation ,  we will not be able to realize the purpose God created us for.  God can free us from the chains of sin.  We have to learn to trust God,  allow Him to set us free and then find our purpose in life by serving God and others.

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life.” – Matthew 20:28

This photo of this sweet dog was taken in Weatherford, Texas. Her name is Bella and she is a favorite amongst the children at Parker County Cowboy Church.

Thank you for stopping by for a weekly dose of blog candy. I hope your week is like a spoonful of sugar!

Back to the Blog

I am planning to get back to the blog this weekend. I had a little hiatus due to a trip to Walt Disney World with some girl-friends. It always takes time getting back, unpacked, back to reality and then there is the whole camera issue. I have to upload the photos, put them in a new folder and go thru the renaming process before I am set up to begin the post-processing. I need some pixie dust so I can get all of that done. Hopefully, this weekend.

Weekly Wishes Report: Disney Resorts

It’s WEDNESDAY and this WEEKLY WISHES REPORT is brought to you showcasing some of the Disney Resorts at the Walt Disney World Resort and two of Disney’s Vacation Club Resort Properties. The resorts at Disney are another piece of the magic for the resort guests. My family has enjoyed stays at the Disney Resorts. To date, our family has experienced 24 Disney resort stays with another stay coming very soon. One thing our family likes to do is stay at a different resort each stay and photograph each resort inside and outside. After our return home, I begin the process of renaming the photos and the post-processing. I have noticed that even our children enjoy getting the photo-books out and looking at our trips from the past.

Some of my favorite Resorts from each level of the Disney Resort collection follows.

The Value Resorts at Disney are a collection of four resorts: Disney’s All Star Movies Resort, Disney’s All Star Music Resort, Disney’s All Star Sports Resort and Disney’s Pop Century Resort. My family has stayed at all four resorts. In fact, we have stayed at All Star Movies and Pop Century for a few repeat stays. One of the things that I think the Disney Imagineers did BIG that makes the Value Resort level fun to to stay at is what I call the “larger than life” statues at each resort. I think that if I were about 5 years old, I would love these statues. Wait, I’m an adult and love them! The beds are comfortable and the pools are fun. Different times of the year Disney makes the price on these really nice and that can make a Disney trip budget a little lower. The Disney Imagineers also themed each of the resorts with the “larger than life” statues to match that particular resort and that is what makes it so magical to experience!

Disney's All Stars Value Resorts

An addition to the Disney Value Resorts is this abandoned resort below. This is a Disney Value Resort that was once started. It can be viewed from Disney’s Pop Century property. It is the unfinished part of Disney’s Pop Century that was begun but later abandoned around the timing of the September 11th events. It was originally planned to be the Legendary Years section. While the Classic Years opened in 2003, this part remained unfinished. A bridge was planned to connect the two parts called Generation Gap Bridge. I do love how Disney has a name for everything! It is now being transformed into Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and plans are to open fall of 2012.

Disney's Art of Animation Resort

The Moderate Resorts are just that…..they are right in the middle of the Value & Deluxe Resort collection at Disney. My family likes them for that reason. As the Value Resorts are the furthest from the parks and the Deluxe Resorts are the closest, the Moderate Resorts are in the middle. There are four resorts: Disney’s Carribean Beach Resort, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside & French Quarter, and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Cabins. My family has stayed at each of these except for the Cabins. Our family has been to the Fort Wilderness area to dine at Trails End and the Hoop-te-Doo Revue dinner show. My favorite out of Disney’s Moderate level Resorts is Disney’s Port Orleans Resort: Riverside and French Quarter. We have stayed at the French Quarter once and Riverside twice. We enjoyed the water taxi to Downtown Disney from this resort as well as the sit down dining and activities available.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

DIsney's Port Orleans Resort, Riverside

Disney's Port Orleans Resort, French Quarter

The Disney Deluxe Resort collection comes with monorails, close walks and water taxis to the parks depending on the location or park chosen to be closest to. This helps with the bus issues for some. Our family has stayed at Disney’s Polynesian Resort twice, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, The Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort. The Polynesian, Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Contemporary Resorts have monorail service and Wilderness Lodge as well as The Swan & Dolphin offer water taxi service. The Epcot area deluxe resorts are close for walking to Epcot Center or to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. When we stayed at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, we were upgraded to a Magic Kingdom view room with full view of the castle. It was at Christmas and that was magical. We kept the curtains in the room open in case we woke up at night and wanted to see the castle. Disney keeps the castle and lights at the Magic Kingdom lit up all night! The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort offers discounts to Nurses, Teachers, and Military as well as the Resort accepts points with Sheraton/Starwood Hotels. That is a nice extra! For an upcoming trip, a stay at the Boardwalk Inn is booked with future plans for Grand Floridian and Beach Club & Yacht Club. Below are a couple of the deluxe level resorts.

The Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort

Disney's Beach Club Resort

In addition to Disney’s Deluxe Resort Collection is Disney’s DVC (Disney Vacation Club) Resorts. We have stayed at two of the DVC Resorts: Disney’s Old Key West Resort and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort is quiet and away from the parks. Some may see that as a downside to the resort, but it is a quiet resort surrounded by golf courses, a fun pool, and daily activities. There is a water taxi to Downtown Disney available. The menu at Olivia’s is wonderful. My family enjoyed our stay at Disney’s Old Key West Resort.

Disney's Old Key West Resort

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort is located in Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. It has a nice lowcountry theme. The pool has a cool slide, there are lots of activities, and the rooms are nice. There is counter service dining at the resort as well as the beach house. The beach house is a short drive or bike ride from the resort. Local restaurants are good at Hilton Head Island as well. It’s a fun resort I plan for our family to re-visit.

Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort

My family has also stayed at two of the Hilton properties located within the Walt Disney World property. I will blog about those at another time. We had a good stay at those two resorts as well.

Each visit, our family enjoys the magic provided by the Disney Resorts.

Thank you for stopping by for a dose of blog candy in the WEEKLY WISHES REPORT. I hope your day is like a spoonful of sugar!

Nice shots! We enjoyed our stay at All-Star Music last week – the first time we have stayed in a Disney Resort in over 7 years!

I Believe…..in Christmas

I believe…..in Christmas. I remember believing in the magical part of Christmas. I still do. In fact, one year, I clearly remember my dad carrying me in late from my grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve and telling me to hurry and get in bed before Santa arrived. I heard reindeer bells. Really, I did. They sounded like they were on the rooftop. I still remember them.

I enjoy watching our children believe in the magical part of Christmas: the tree, the stockings, preparing for Santa.

One of our favorite ornaments is this Mickey Mouse shaped ornament from Walt Disney World. I remember when we purchased the ornament. We actually purchased it at the same time as the four stockings that hang from our fireplace mantle. Each of the ornaments on our tree has a special meaning. Each year, we enjoy choosing a Disney ornament to hang on our tree for the year.

We decided Santa and Mrs. Claus would like some sugar cookies, so we let our children help apply sprinkles to the cookies and bake the cookies Christmas Eve. They poured a glass of milk to go with the cookies and put the milk and cookies on the fireplace in anticipation of Santa arriving. They begged to stay up to meet Santa face-to-face, but both couldn’t keep their eyes open and Daddy carried them to bed.

The next morning, we awoke to excitement as they discovered what Santa brought them for being good all year.

As much as our children like believing in the magic of Christmas and awaiting for Santa, they also understand why we celebrate Christmas. They know the story of Jesus being born approximately 2000 years ago and coming to earth as our Savior. They understand he died on a cross for our sins so we can live an eternal life with Him.

This is a photo taken at Walt Disney World at the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studio. The light show is set to Christmas music. About every 10 minutes, the lights begin to “dance” to favorite Christmas music, while “snow” falls. It is a fun atmosphere. At the end of the display of lights is a manger scene. Visiting Walt Disney World at Christmas time, this manger scene is a very good reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18

25 Days of Christmas Countdown

theme: Celebrate CHRISTmas
symbol: the tree
meaning: tree of eternal life

We completed our 25 Days of Christmas Countdown with our family. It was a great way to share Bible stories with our children as we prepared to celebrate CHRISTmas through ornament hanging each night and tell them the meaning of the tree of eternal life.

I am planning to put together a new set of ornaments for next year and photograph the new set. The 25 Day Countdown to Christmas with each day’s scripture, theme, symbol, meaning and ornament can be found under Holidays in the Nurse Files.

Thank you for coming to the blog and reading….stay tuned for more posts about our adventures this next year.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 25

scripture reading: Luke 2
theme: the birth of Jesus
symbol: Sun (“Son”) or baby
meaning: God sent his son to live on earth and die on a cross for our sins

Luke 2:1-20
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 24

scripture reading: Matthew 2, Luke 2
theme: the King of all kings: the story of the three wise men
symbol: a star
meaning: worshipping the King

The kids loved this story with the star that represented the three wise men as they followed the star….to lead them to the manger where Jesus lay…and they brought gifts for the king.

We are thankful for the gifts we are given. We are thankful for the gifts we are able to share during this season with the people we love.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 23

scripture reading: Luke 1-2
theme: the journey to Bethlehem
symbol: scroll or cross
meaning: God coming to earth

We chose a wooden cross for this ornament, but it was supposed to be a scroll referring to the census that was taken. We thought a cross was a better ornament as it represents God coming to earth by way of his Son…the journey to Bethlehem to see the King of Kings.

We are thankful as we take our daily journeys we have a God that guides us.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 22

scripture reading: Luke 1-2
theme: Mary and the angel
symbol: an angel
meaning: God’s plan revealed

This was an exciting story for the kids….as it told of an angel that appeared to Mary and told her she would give birth to the Messiah. Every time we hear this story, we think of all the details that surrounded Mary and Joseph during that time….the rumors and the detail leading up to the birth of Jesus.

We are thankful for the Son of God that came and walked on earth and died on the cross so that we may have eternal life.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 21

scripture reading: Matthew 3, Luke 1 and John 1
theme: the story of John the Baptist
symbol: a shell
meaning: a traditional symbol for baptism

We did not know that a shell is a tradional symbol for baptism. We were thinking along the lines of John the Baptist baptizing in the Jordan river and shells are in water. So, we learned something new. This story prepares them as they learned about baptism and its symbolism.

We are thankful that we are baptized with Christ and have a new life with Him. We remember the exact words our church at home said during baptisms, “Buried with Him in baptism and raised to walk in a newness of life.”

Weekly Wishes Report

It’s WEDNESDAY and this WEEKLY WISHES REPORT is brought to you showcasing some of the Disney Cast Members at the Walt Disney World Resort. The Cast Members add a piece of the magic every day for the park guests. My family has encountered some of the magical treatment by many of the Cast Members at the Walt Disney World Resort and those are some of the memories I enjoy remembering.

Some of my favorite Cast Member encounters follow.

This is Jim. Jim plays a ragtime repertoire on the piano outside of Casey’s Corner along Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom. Our family has encountered him more than any of the other pianists. We wanted to know Jim’s knowledge of ragtime music, especially since my husband and I have musical backgrounds. He was quite knowledgeable about ragtime music and was very conversational between his music. We asked him to play The Entertainer. He obliged, but offered to play a section of The Entertainer that people do not usually play. If you are interested in Disney Ragtime Music, click here for Chris Calabrese’s songs.

Along Main Street, we noticed a Cast Member marking the parade route with the assistance of another Cast Member. However, this Cast Member was disabled. He used his wheelchair wheel to press the tape down to the walkway. I happened to have my camera ready to capture this piece of the magic.

Below is every child’s favorite Cast Member in the park – the Cast Member in balloon sales. Aaaahhhhhh….they attract the eyes of our little children. Then we wait for it….Daddy, Mommy? Can I have a Mickey balloon? We usually give in. But I warn. Do NOT tie Disney balloons to stroller handles. They will hit you in the face at every wind turn disrupting your point of view. The children LOOOOOOOOVE them and I will tolerate the balloon as a distraction to my view while our children enjoy the magic with a piece of plastic and helium.

I like the turn-of-the-century costuming these Cast Members wear and the fashion in which they hold their balloons. They will let park guests hold the whole group of balloons for a photo (if you ask). Favorite nostalgic shots are the balloons in front of the castle, but that is perfect for another Weekly Wishes Report. Here, I captured the balloon saleswoman speaking to another Cast Member off of Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. In this photo, I can almost feel Walt Disney nearby with a taste of Main Street USA nostalgia. I know this is what he envisioned when he built Disneyland.

Walt Disney said, “For those of us who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back happy memories. For younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of their grandfather’s youth.”

As part of the Main Street theming, another favorite Cast Member is the Singing Fireman. He goes by Smokey Miller. He carries quite the collection of Disney Pins and will trade pins with the park guests if asked. He is a jolly fellow and always sings along Main Street USA. He usually hangs out close to the Main Street Fire Station. It has been said that Walt Disney used to drive the fire engine around the Disneyland Resort before it opened many mornings.

At park close, the Cast Members begin to put away the Disney merchandise and close their shoppes. One evening, I was at the Magic Kingdom with my husband, children and my parents. We stopped along this jewelry shoppe on Main Street USA and I captured this older gentleman closing for the night and getting ready to go home. I have to admit, I have a Disney jewelry fetish. It’s true. One day, I will have to go through a Disney 12-step program for my Disney jewelry obsession. There I said it. Oh, wait, my husband would also tell you about my Disney handbag collection I have, too. I have purchased the inexpensive Disney handbags as well as the Disney Dooney & Bourkes. My husband thinks I forget to pack enough luggage for souvenirs just so I will have to buy a new handbag. Shhhhhhhhh, our secret. My favorite place for jewelry and handbags are along Main Street USA at the Uptown Jewelers and Mouse Gears at Epcot. The next time you go to Disney, stop off at Uptown Jewelers and think of me.

The magic with Cast Members doesn’t just happen at the Magic Kingdom. It also happens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort. One morning our family was at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and our daughter was getting impatient (due to her princess personality traits) waiting on us as we were looking at the Show Schedule on the chalkboard at the information station. Here, a very kind Cast Member leaned over the window to hand our daughter a Mickey Mouse sticker. The sticker was like pixie dust as my daughter’s eyes lit up and we were able to decide on a time for the Beauty and the Beast Show. We made sure our daughter in return, used her manners and thanked this kind Cast Member.

Each visit, our family encounters magical kindness of the Cast Members at Disney.

Thank you for stopping by for a dose of blog candy in the WEEKLY WISHES REPORT. I hope your day is like a spoonful of sugar!

25 Days of Christmas: Day 20

scripture reading: Nehemiah 8-10, Malachi 1, 3-4, Ezra 7
theme: get ready! God’s people return from being slaves
symbol: a party hat
meaning: celebrate all the Lord had done

Who doesn’t love parties? I know our kids do. They love the planning, the party, and looking at the photos from their party.

We are thankful that we can celebrate what God does for us each day and one day there will be a huge celebration with our Lord.

25 Days of Christmas: Day 19

scripture reading: Jonah 1-4; Hebrews 1:1-2
theme: God’s messenger: Jonah and the big fish
symbol: a big fish or whale
meaning: obedience

So it is just a fish and not a whale. In order for me to find a wooden whale, I would have to paint one. Do you seriously think I had the time to paint a whale? At first, I considered it. But, there was a wooden fish shape already painted. I took it — hook, line and sinker. Another favorite Bible story for the kids and they enjoyed telling it to us.

We are thankful that we serve an obedient God and that He teaches us each day to be patient and obedient to Him.
